ARTISTS’ BIOPICS CINEMA
2008

SMART Project Space presents the first solo exhibition by French artist Matthieu Laurette to be staged in the Netherlands since 1998.
Laurette established himself in the 1990’s with his exploration of the relationships between art, spectacle, media and economy using
a variety of media, from TV and video to installation and public interventions.

For the exhibition ARTISTS’ BIOPIC CINEMA, that traverses all 6 gallery spaces at Smart Project Space, Laurette has created a series
of 6 cinema spaces that continually screen 18 full-length Hollywood and art house feature films portraying the mythical characters
of Andy Warhol, Rembrandt, Jackson Pollock, Pablo Picasso, Gustav Klimt, Frida Kahlo, Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dalí, Camille Claudel,
Caravaggio, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francis Bacon and other famous artists.
Laurette playfully described the exhibition as “a sort of Institutional Critique meets Film Industry meets Art Sociology meets Art Economy
meets Art History » where visitors can observe ways in which the film industry cultivates feeds and perpetuates the myth of the artist.
